Forest of Souls coverDanger lurks within the roots of Forest of Souls, an epic, unrelenting tale of destiny and sisterhood, perfect for fans of Naomi Novik and Susan Dennard.

Sirscha Ashwyn comes from nothing, but she’s intent on becoming something. After years of training to become the queen’s next royal spy, her plans are derailed when shamans attack and kill her best friend Saengo.

And then Sirscha, somehow, restores Saengo to life.

Unveiled as the first soulguide in living memory, Sirscha is summoned to the domain of the Spider King. For centuries, he has used his influence over the Dead Wood—an ancient forest possessed by souls—to enforce peace between the kingdoms. Now, with the trees growing wild and untamed, only a soulguide can restrain them. As war looms, Sirscha must master her newly awakened abilities before the trees shatter the brittle peace, or worse, claim Saengo, the friend she would die for.

First of all, the cover! Sirscha looks so fierce. Forest of Souls sounds like a lush fantasy story that blends some of my favorite elements: court intrigue with the queen’s spy situation and mystical elements. Plus, a focus on friendships? Always yes!

Fun fact: I am terrified of spiders, so I will probably be reading my eARC during daylight hours only. *shudders*

This isn’t an “Asian fantasy,” according to my own definitions (it might be, according to yours, and that’s okay). But it is “Asians in fantasy.” It’s a mishmash of my favorite western fantasy tropes alongside bits of my own cultural influences and a magical system *inspired* by Hmong shamanism.Lori M. With everything going on in the world right now and some publication dates being pushed back, I want to do my part to boost books I’m excited for… especially since my reading capacity on ARCs has been zero for weeks.

Are you excited for Forest of Souls? Was it already on your radar? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

I have an eARC of it that’s literally beckoning to me… but I am trying to get through my May ARC & at least one more overdue arc read before diving into this one. It’s so hard, though!

I’ve been seeing this book everywhere but I feel like it takes more and more for me to pick up fantasy YA books because there are just SO MANY of them. On a side note, I love this post type – I almost think I need to do something similar for all the upcoming ARCs that I haven’t got to reading yet…

I know what you mean, Bec. We are truly BLESSED with all of the YA fantasy coming out but it is a bit difficult for a book to stand out among the rest. I always feel like I am missing out on books because there’s no way I can read everything and it makes me sad. YES do a post series like this one! I am loving it and think spotlights like this are especially important given the state of publishing & the world right now!
