Book Haul: May, June & July 2019

Haul May-June 19
I Must Be Stopped

Welcome to three months worth of book haul, friends! It’s certainly been awhile since I posted a book haul, but that is more a result of my slump, hiatus, and move to self-hosted in the last few months than my not acquiring new books. (I have a problem, friends. See the shame total graphic! Sure it breaks down to $6.96 a book, but STILL.)

As always, I want to reiterate that you do not need to buy and own a lot of books in order to be considered a book blogger or lover. I am quite frugal with everything else so that I can buy books because I love them, but I do not ever want to make you feel bad if you cannot afford to buy books or have poor access where you live.

Physical Book Haul

I’m fortunate enough to be in the position to be able to buy finished copies of books I read as ARCs and enjoyed; you may notice a few duplicates across the haul categories.

The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling
Adult, Science Fiction, Horror, LGBT

A thrilling, atmospheric debut with the intensive drive of The Martian and Gravity and the creeping dread of Annihilation, in which a caver on a foreign planet finds herself on a terrifying psychological and emotional journey for survival.

When Gyre Price lied her way into this expedition, she thought she’d be mapping mineral deposits, and that her biggest problems would be cave collapses and gear malfunctions. She also thought that the fat paycheck—enough to get her off-planet and on the trail of her mother—meant she’d get a skilled surface team, monitoring her suit and environment, keeping her safe. Keeping her sane.

Instead, she got Em.

Em sees nothing wrong with controlling Gyre’s body with drugs or withholding critical information to “ensure the smooth operation” of her expedition. Em knows all about Gyre’s falsified credentials, and has no qualms using them as a leash—and a lash. And Em has secrets, too . . .

As Gyre descends, little inconsistencies—missing supplies, unexpected changes in the route, and, worst of all, shifts in Em’s motivations—drive her out of her depths. Lost and disoriented, Gyre finds her sense of control giving way to paranoia and anger. On her own in this mysterious, deadly place, surrounded by darkness and the unknown, Gyre must overcome more than just the dangerous terrain and the Tunneler which calls underground its home if she wants to make it out alive—she must confront the ghosts in her own head.

But how come she can’t shake the feeling she’s being followed?

Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Adult, Historical fiction

Everyone knows Daisy Jones & The Six, but nobody knows the reason behind their split at the absolute height of their popularity . . . until now.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.

Considering it was for three months .. 10books a month on average make this not so bad 🙈 the only one we have in common is the night circus! And although I did really wanted to like it.. I just got way too lost in it for understanding 😂 gotta eventually try it as an audiobook to see if that’s better.

I’ve only bought two books this month! (Then again i dont buy online and work alot so no book shops for me hah! Works great 😘) — I got the chaos of standing still & « Celle qui lisait mes pensées » (french of the one who read my mind – a mystery/romance type of thing)

Oh noooo, breaking bans spells disaster for me LOL! I swear I got HAM when I finally break and spend way more money than I normally do hahaha. I still need to read Sky in the Deep but I have a feeling I will LOVE it! I hope you have wonderful reading, and I adored Finale!

Holy moly, looks like you’ve gotten a lot of great books! Sorcery of Thorns! <3
I also picked up a copy of Slayer, I'm reading it for r/fantasy bingo this year as my media tie in book since I'm trying to do an all vampire themed card. 🙂

So many books and so little time to read them! But I will be reading Sorcery of Thorns this month!!!!

I hope we love Slayer! I am still afraid to read it because I love the show so much. It may doom the book lol

Excited to see your thoughts on both of these. Definitely feel ya on the so many books thing, my TBR is out of control haha.
I hope we both love Slayer too! I also loved the show, so we’ll see. 🙂
