The Gilded Wolves (The Gilded Wolves #1) by Roshani Chokshi

“Everywhere he looked, he was surrounded by gilded wolves. And for whatever reason, it made him feel perfectly at home. Wolves were everywhere. In politics, on thrones, in beds. They cut their teeth on history and grew fat on war. Not that Séverin was complaining. It was just that, like other wolves, he wanted his share.”

I am a sucker for historical fantasy, and The Gilded Wolves delivers an action-packed story with a diverse cast of characters that I treasured with every ounce of my being. A secret society that pulls the strings of society (Illuminati?!)? Hunting for artifacts? Magic and technological invention when the world was on the cusp of Industrialism? Heck. Yes. If you are in the mood for an adventure with a precious found family, this book might be for you!

It’s Paris, 1889. The world is at the brink of the Industrial Revolution, but there is another kind of technology that goes back way further. “The art of Forging is as old as civilization itself,” and is the magic system of the book. Those born with the ability manifest it by their 13th birthday and can either influence the mind or matter.

Pitch Dark by Courtney Alameda

“Blackness, a sort of darkness we didn’t have on Earth. A perfect pitch dark. A complete absence of light. Void-like. Terrible.”

What a creepy and atmospheric story! Pitch Dark is a fast-paced and frightening story; I was completely sucked in on the first page and captivated until the very end. There are so many different layers of complexity here and Alameda crafted a really good book. My friend Destiny recommended this book to me months ago after I read and fell in love with Contagion by Erin Bowman, and when I saw it available on BookOutlet for $6 back in September I had to get it. She gets an A+ for this book recommendation, if you enjoyed Contagion or other horror/sci-fi mashups then this book is for you!

This is My Genre Tag: Science Fiction

What do you do when the post you had planned for today is taking a lot longer to put together than originally anticipated? Tweak the schedule, of course! My friend Jamsu @ Jamsudreams tagged me in the genre tag last week and what perfect timing that was for me. If you aren’t already following Jamsu, I recommend checking out her blog – she writes great and succinct reviews and reads a lot of fantasy/paranormal romance, and is lovely!

I am not sure who created this tag originally so I cannot provide credit, but this is one where you answer the questions provided about your favorite genre. Perfect for Sci-fi Month! Let’s get into it…

The Game (The Game is Life #1) by Terry Schott

I first bought The Game back in 2014 because it was free in the Kindle store and it sounded interesting. Since then I have read it a handful of times prior to Goodreads enabling re-read capabilities, and it is probably one book that I recommend to everyone that I meet.

The Game by Terry Schott is a fantastic start to The Game is Life series. The planet of Tygon has revolutionized the educational system. Instead of going through school, they play The Game – a virtual reality where they are socialized through the multiple plays that they have, experiencing many lifetimes and experiences until they age out at 18 and have to enter Tygonian society.

It’s the 30 year anniversary of the Game, and one of Tygon’s best Gamers Zack enters for his final play. Will he finish in the number one slot? Will his careful planning be successful? Time is running out… but for what?

Sci-Fi Month: November TBR

Greetings, readers! Those of you that have been around here for awhile know that I don’t normally do a strict monthly TBR (to be read). While I do have an idea of what I am hoping to get to based on review request responsibilities, I tend to leave things rather open for mood reading. I know myself and considering I slump it up at least 5 days out of the month, I don’t want to feel stressed out for not reading so I avoid TBRs.

But for Sci-fi month I have a number of science fiction books from my owned TBR stack that I have buddy reads scheduled for and I am so excited!
