Today’s BLOGOWEEN prompt comes from Jamsu @ Jamsudreams, and you can find her prompt post here. I was originally planning on posting this one yesterday, but I had a massive brain fart and decided to delay a day so I could do the prompt justice!
Prompt Title: Hexes & Curses Explanation: 10 Characters You’d Curse: in today‘s prompt you can list all those characters you wish you could curse.
10 Characters I Want to Curse
TODAY IS THE DAY THAT I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR… I can finally drag some characters as well as some character tropes that I simply cannot stand! So without further adieu… let’s get cursing!
Mary Sue characters like Bella Swan are CURSED! They are idealized and perfect to the point of being almost bland with no personality. Sure they often have tragic backstories (which I love because I’m evil and love tortured characters), but nothing really ever happens to them. They always will triumph.
The bumbling policeman trope. All of these cops that really have no business being in public service have been cursed. Sure people make mistakes but this is an extreme. Why are there no qualified people? How are these people employed? And why is it “acceptable” to have a cop refuse to help because they don’t like the person? The latter drives me nuts because it’s “conflict” for the sake of conflict and ranks up there with conflict that could easily be resolved if the characters spoke to one another. Ugh.
Mean Popular Girls deserve some boils or other curses to match their ugly personality. Sure we all find Mean Girls to be a funny and iconic movie, but I really dislike this trope overall and I feel like the constant portrayal of their nasty attitudes and “winning” in popularity continues to exacerbate it in society.
Maram from Mirage certainly deserves a little something. I feel for her as a character and she is probably my favorite in the book, but man does she have an attitude problem.
The entire cast in Rule.My goodness, Zofi and Florencia are horrible people. Screw destiny, ya’ll don’t deserve shit.
Nomi from Grace and Fury. UGHHHHH. She was so stupid.
Ember from The Lanterns Ember. UGHHH homegirl listened to NO ONE and acted as if she knew everything (spoiler alert: she didn’t) and then got all mad when she was wrong.
TifAni from The Luckiest Girl Alive. Man I hated this book so much, and it was because of TifAni. The meanest of mean girls with a vapid personality and is so unlikeable and unrelatable.
Jasmine from Angel (TV). Goodness did season 4 jump the shark, and the villain Jasmine was the culmination of everything wrong. Just… no.
Riley from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV). The literal worst character in all of the Buffyverse! This corn-fed Iowa boy was the worst boyfriend that our heroine had. Boring and selfish guy that places blame on Buffy for not giving him her full attention when her mother is sick. Who does that?! And I won’t ever forgive him for rubbing Sam in Buffy’s face like 8 months later.
I agree, Riley was by far the worst character in the buffyverse. And all those bumbling policemen? How have they stayed employed all these years! Cool post 🙂
I liked Shatter me series -The original trilogy- the writing is great and very poetic and thus may not be for everyone. The characters start as annoying and frustrating but the character development was one of the best I’ve ever read. The first book in the extension though made the characters lame again which made me angry :((
It was good but had a kind of an open ending! My opinion regarding Restore me (book 4) is kind of unpopular one too. It is a very fast read so maybe try Shatter me and see how it goes?
As much as I like Twilight, I’d curse Bella too. Especially from New Moon on because her character just got progressively worse. The entire series, really, which is why I only read the first book. 😀
Perfection is really boring for me. I like conflict and growth, and if the character starts out perfect that leaves no room for growth or development. Just winds up being really flat for me.
Oh, i so agree on the #2, the useless police officer. I love crime stories, and read a lot of them, and all those detectives and whatnots who just refuse to work because of personal reasons… Yea, i can see someone pulling that once. But not for 20 years! Especially if they are in a big city, not some village where that person is the only police…
Love that Hades gif <3 Curse the mean popular girls!!! It was a good trope, but now it's overused and it no longer makes me feel sorry of the main character – especially when there's no reason for the mean girl to hate the MC because she's super nice and sweet and never did anything wrong.

Thank you so much for stopping by, and I am glad you agree with Riley being horrible.
I stan this list. Even the Twilight one, because #truth. I will die for these to not exist anymore. DIIIIEEEEEEE
It means a lot to me that you agree with Bella. Because man…
I’d curse Professor Umbridge! I hate that woman 🙈
Season 4 of Angel was the absolute worst. I hate what they did to Wesley’s character.
ME TOO! I live in a world where that season doesn’t exist and I skip it whenever I re-watch the series. lol
GET ‘EMMMM.
I’m gonna be honest, the only character I know on this list is Bella Swan, but as for all of the tropes? SAME.
GET THEM TROPES OUTTA MY FICTION! OUT!
Awww poor Riley! I have to admit I really liked him, but you’re right, he turned into an asshole.
I liked him at first (even though I found him kind of boring) because he was so good for Buffy. But man, his arc was terrible.
RILEYS THE WORST (but I think Dawn is worse)
DOWN WITH DAWN! Fun fact she was also on this list with Riley originally but removed her.
Great choices, I remembered Juliette (shatter me) and Mare Barrow (Red Queen), They were so so stupiddddd!
I haven’t read either of those books, but what did you think of Shatter Me? I finally looked at the synopsis and am intrigued…
I liked Shatter me series -The original trilogy- the writing is great and very poetic and thus may not be for everyone. The characters start as annoying and frustrating but the character development was one of the best I’ve ever read. Hmmm okay good to know. Is the first trilogy end well? Like could I just plan on reading 1-3 and be okay?
It was good but had a kind of an open ending! My opinion regarding Restore me (book 4) is kind of unpopular one too. It is a very fast read so maybe try Shatter me and see how it goes?
Hmmm okay thanks for sharing your thoughts with me, Hamad!
As much as I like Twilight, I’d curse Bella too. Especially from New Moon on because her character just got progressively worse. The entire series, really, which is why I only read the first book. 😀
I only read the first book so I cannot speak to the rest of the series, but from what I have heard… yea. Worse and worse.
I love this. The mean popular girls would make my list too 😬
They are the WORST!
I just want to say
RILEY SUCKS!!! Argh, I hated him so so much! Worst character ever! Good that we agree on that 😀
And yeah, Mary Sues and Gary Stus drive me crazy as well. Who wants to read about and cheer for perfect people? Give me someone more realistic.
DOWN WITH RILEY!
Perfection is really boring for me. I like conflict and growth, and if the character starts out perfect that leaves no room for growth or development. Just winds up being really flat for me.

RIGHT!? I swear every book that I read has the bumbling/careless police officer and it drives me nuts at how unrealistic this is? Why is this a thing?

Tânia @MyLovelySecret
Oh my god this post is the best thing!! Love it- and totally agree with all of these, especially the first haha
Love this prompt! I wholeheartedly agree with your first three curses!! Especially Mary Sues and “mean girls”!
This prompt is so fun, and glad you agree! Thanks for reading, sweets!
