YALLWEST goes Digital for 2020, April 25th & 26th!

Concerts, sporting events, and festivals of all shapes and sizes have been cancelled while COVID-19 ravages around the globe. Book festivals such as YALLWest and Book Con are among the countless events cancelled in 2020. The ripple effect of these closures are yet to be seen, but these events are among the only way for readers (who aren’t reviewers/content creators) to engage with authors and publishers. Book events like these and book tour stops are a vital way for authors to connect with readers and promote their upcoming work.

I was actually registered to attend both BookCon in NYC (with Kate @ Your Tita Kate) and YALLWest (with Dev @ Read by Dev). I’m not gonna lie, I am a bit sad to not be able to hang out with bookish friends but I am really happy that some events are being shifted into online models for 2020!

Book Haul for March // Buying & Not Reading Books

March was a difficult month for pretty much everyone, and as a result of the economic status right now I have cut down on my discretionary spending. But this is my second “once in a lifetime economic crisis” of my adulthood, so I know how important it is to keep money flowing in the economy if you are able to do so. (This is why economic stimulus bills happen – they want to encourage the injection of funds into the economy.)

Thankfully I am in a better financial situation than in 2008. When non-essential stores were ordered shuttered to help flatten the curve, I wanted to place an order with my local indie to help support a place that has provided me with a lot of joy. Especially since they almost had to close a few months ago!

As always, I want to reiterate that you do not need to buy and own a lot of books in order to be considered a book blogger or lover. I am quite frugal with everything else so that I can buy books because I love them, but I do not ever want to make you feel bad if you cannot afford to buy books or have poor access where you live.

What My Favorite Characters Would Do in Quarantine // Original Book Tag

These are some wild and scary times, my friends. But honestly, I am not here to talk about the state of the world right now… ya gal needs to escape a bit.

I don’t know about you, but I tend to cope with super stressful situations by diving into fantasy worlds (aka avoidance). For some reason looking at my This Mortal Coil shelf got me thinking about what the main character would do if she were me… and then I wondered what a bunch of my favorites would do in quarantine. And thus this tag was born! (This is what happens when you’ve been socially isolating and live alone.)

Book Haul for February // I Kind of Behaved?

Am I the only person who struggles with how to open these kinds of posts? Because goodness, it is really tough sometimes to not sound like a broken record. “I bought books again, are we surprised?”

I am actually quite proud of myself! While I bought kind of a bunch of books, 1) the quantity isn’t that bad, and 2) I already read most of them! All of my physical haul, save one book, I read as eARCs and loved them so much that I had to buy finished copies. Since I am super behind on writing reviews, please take this post as a brief screech into the void that I recommend these books. But what am I waiting for? Let’s get into the haul!

A Week in Reading from Quarantine

Greetings, friends! I don’t normally do weekly recap posts – mostly because I have weeks that I do literally nothing – but considering everything that’s been going on in the world and my personal life over the last month, I thought now was a good time!

So let’s grab a cup of coffee, pet a local cat, and chat about what’s been going on in the last week.
