His Hideous Heart Readalong: Voracious Book Club Pick for January
(Last Updated On: January 16, 2022)
Join the Voracious Book Club this January for a His Hideous Heart readalong. Each year for my birthday, I’ve hosted some kind of group reading event to celebrate my birthday (which I share with Poe), and this year it’s time to tackle the 2018 YA anthology His Hideous Heart.
Join the Voracious Book Club this January with the group readalong of His Hideous Heart, a YA anthology reimagining 13 Edgar Allan Poe stories! Contributors include Kendare Blake, Rin Chupeco, Tiffany D. Jackson, and more!
I fully intend to read these books in my reading chair, under my Raven litograph, and snuggled in my The Raven blanket in full Poe Hoe Glory. But you can join in without all the swag, promise!
His Hideous Heart Voracious Book Club Readalong
When is it? January 3 – 30, 2021
What’s the Schedule?
Week 1: “She Rode a Horse of Fire” by Kenare Blake, “It’s Carnival!” by Tiffany D. Jackson, “Night-Tide” by Tessa Gratton7
Week 2: “The Glittering Death” by Caleb Roehrig, “A Drop of Stolen Ink” by Emily Lloyd-Jones, “Happy Days, Sweetheart” by Stephanie Kuehn
Week 3: “The Raven (Remix)” by amanda lovelace, “Changeling” by Marieke Nijkamp, “The Oval Filter” by Lamar Giles
Week 4: “Red” by Hillary Monahan, “Lygia” by Dahlia Adler, “The Fall of the Bank of Usher” by Fran Wilde, “The Murders of Rue Apartelle, Boracay” by Rin Chupeco
The cool thing about this collection is that it also includes the original works upon which these reimaginings are based. So you can compare if you are so inclined!
Will there be chats? Yes! We’ll have weekly discussions on Saturdays (9, 16, 23, 30) for those who want to join in on Discord. They will be informal discussions about that week’s short stories!
Thirteen of YA’s most celebrated names reimagine Edgar Allan Poe’s most surprising, unsettling, and popular tales for a new generation.
Edgar Allan Poe may be a hundred and fifty years beyond this world, but the themes of his beloved works have much in common with modern young adult fiction. Whether the stories are familiar to readers or discovered for the first time, readers will revel in Edgar Allan Poe’s classic tales, and how they’ve been brought to life in 13 unique and unforgettable ways.
Contributors include Kendare Blake (reimagining “Metzengerstein”), Rin Chupeco (“The Murders in the Rue Morge”), Lamar Giles (“The Oval Portrait”), Tessa Gratton (“Annabel Lee”), Tiffany D. Jackson (“The Cask of Amontillado”), Stephanie Kuehn (“The Tell-Tale Heart”), Emily Lloyd-Jones (“The Purloined Letter”), Hillary Monahan (“The Masque of the Red Death”), Marieke Nijkamp (“Hop-Frog”), Caleb Roehrig (“The Pit and the Pendulum”), and Fran Wilde (“The Fall of the House of Usher”).
The Poeathon is my favorite time of the year as I get to share my love of Edgar Allan Poe with some of my favorite people in the bookish community. I’d love it if you joined me this year to celebrate my birthday… and if you’ve never read Poe, these reimaginings are a great place to start!
Have you read His Hideous Heart yet or do you plan to? Are you a fan of Edgar Allan Poe? Will you join us in our readalong this January?
happy birthday in advance, kal!! i’ve got to admit i was more of a ‘silent’ reader of your blog, and you were somewhat an idol for me, but ahh i was so excited when i saw your comment on my blog!! 🥺❤ i just wanted to say i love how much you’re trying to help all the readers in this wonderful community, and all the initiatives you’ve taken are inspiring (flapping pages arcs, nerd voracious, and all the planners and spreadsheets you create are always so so helpful!!) i’m hoping to interact more on your posts in the future, because skfjkdjh i love them so much!! i won’t be participating in this readalong, because i have a ton of exams coming up in school, but i did join the discord group, and i’m super excited to be there!! happy new year ❤❤
Thanks for the early birthday wishes, I love starting my birthday month with the right vibes haha.
Your comment is so sweet and I’m truly humbled by your compliments! Don’t mind me while I blush and make awkward whale noises in the corner, though. Good luck with your exams and I look forward to getting to know you better!
