7 Books to Read for Spooky Season
Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe
Take the plunge. Dive into this classic from the singular mind of Edgar Allan Poe, who is widely regarded as the short story master of horror fiction.
“The Fall .. ” recounts the terrible events that befall the last remaining members of the once-illustrious Usher clan before it is — quite literally — rent asunder. With amazing economy, Poe plunges the reader into a state of deliciously agonizing suspense. It’s a must-read for fans of the golden era of horror writing. “The Fall ..” is one of Poe’s best known short stories – if not the best.
Read the Short Story Read my Review
The Fall of the House of Usher is one of the best short stories from Edgar Allan Poe. There’s very little haunting imagery with masterful suspense and unease that spools as the short story progresses.
“I felt that I breathed an atmosphere of sorrow. An air of stern, deep, and irredeemable gloom hung over and pervaded all.”
The Fall of the House of Usher is perfect for fans of Gothic fiction and suspense, with themes of decay and madness at the fore.
Our Last Echoes by Kate Alice Marshall
A supernatural thriller about one girl’s hunt for the truth about her mother’s disappearance.
Sophia’s first memory is of drowning. She remembers the darkness of the water and the briny taste as it fills her throat. She remembers the cold shock of going under. She remembers her mother pulling her to safety before disappearing forever. But Sophia has never been in the ocean. And her mother died years ago in a hospital. Or so she has been told her whole life.
A series of clues have led Sophia to the island of Bitter Rock, Alaska, where she talked her way into a summer internship at the Landon Avian Research Center, the same center her mother worked at right before she died. There, she meets the disarmingly clever Liam, whose own mother runs the LARC, as well as Abby, who’s following a mystery of her own: a series of unexplained disappearances. People have been vanishing from Bitter Rock for decades, leaving only their ghostly echoes behind. When it looks like their two mysteries might be one and the same, Sophia vows to dig up the truth, no matter how many lies she has to tell along the way. Even if it leads her to a truth she may not want to face.
If you like urban legends and paranormal stories dripping with so much atmosphere that you feel nervous reading, Our Last Echoes is a must read for Spooky Season. I’m sorry to include two books from the same author but they are both so good, okay?!?! There are a few references and Easter Eggs to the world from Rules for Vanishing, but reading that book isn’t required for enjoyment.
“At least three times before, people had tried to gain footholds of one kind or another on that side of the island. Every time it ended in disaster.”
Our Last Echoes is perfect for fans of spooky and atmospheric writing, especially told in multi-media format with interviews, video recordings, and written testimony.
The Haunting of Alejandra by V. Castro
A woman is haunted by the Mexican folk demon La Llorona as she unravels the dark secrets of her family history in this ravishing and provocative horror novel.
Alejandra no longer knows who she is. To her husband, she is a wife, and to her children, a mother. To her own adoptive mother, she is a daughter. But they cannot see who Alejandra has become: a woman struggling with a darkness that threatens to consume her.
Nor can they see what Alejandra sees. In times of despair, a ghostly vision appears to her, the apparition of a crying woman in a ragged white gown.
When Alejandra visits a therapist, she begins exploring her family’s history, starting with the biological mother she never knew. As she goes deeper into the lives of the women in her family, she learns that heartbreak and tragedy are not the only things she has in common with her ancestors.
Because the crying woman was with them, too. She is La Llorona, the vengeful and murderous mother of Mexican legend. And she will not leave until Alejandra follows her mother, her grandmother, and all the women who came before her into the darkness.
But Alejandra has inherited more than just pain. She has inherited the strength and the courage of her foremothers—and she will have to summon everything they have given her to banish La Llorona forever.
The Haunting of Alejandra is a book about learning to love oneself and heal both personal and generational trauma. It’s more than a ghost story and Alejandra is haunted by more than La Llorona. It’s also about the horrors of the patriarchy and is an honest look at the thankless reality of motherhood. This book made me cry and while I am not a mother myself, I feel seen and will treasure this book.
“You have the power to transform anytime you want […] Sometimes in life we have to endure the death of others and the death of parts of ourselves. But it is just transformation.”
The Haunting of Alejandra is perfect for fans of women’s fiction that takes urban legend into a powerful and haunting story that will stick with you long after reading.
The Bone Houses by Emily Lloyd-Jones
Seventeen-year-old Aderyn (“Ryn”) only cares about two things: her family, and her family’s graveyard. And right now, both are in dire straits. Since the death of their parents, Ryn and her siblings have been scraping together a meager existence as gravediggers in the remote village of Colbren, which sits at the foot of a harsh and deadly mountain range that was once home to the fae. The problem with being a gravedigger in Colbren, though, is that the dead don’t always stay dead.
The risen corpses are known as “bone houses,” and legend says that they’re the result of a decades-old curse. When Ellis, an apprentice mapmaker with a mysterious past, arrives in town, the bone houses attack with new ferocity. What is it that draws them near? And more importantly, how can they be stopped for good?
Together, Ellis and Ryn embark on a journey that will take them deep into the heart of the mountains, where they will have to face both the curse and the long-hidden truths about themselves.
Are you looking for a unique and atmospheric fantasy/horror read with lovable characters and amazing character relationships? How about a goat as a faithful companion? You should check out The Bone Houses!
“The forest did not scare her; rather, she wanted to be like it: ageless and impervious, cruel and beautiful. Death could not touch it.”
The Bone Houses is perfect for fans of zombies and people who enjoy fairytale style stories with the vibes of the Brothers Grimm.
Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw
Cassandra Khaw’s Nothing But Blackened Teeth is a gorgeously creepy haunted house tale, steeped in Japanese folklore and full of devastating twists.
A Heian-era mansion stands abandoned, its foundations resting on the bones of a bride and its walls packed with the remains of the girls sacrificed to keep her company.
It’s the perfect wedding venue for a group of thrill-seeking friends.
But a night of food, drinks, and games quickly spirals into a nightmare. For lurking in the shadows is the ghost bride with a black smile and a hungry heart.
And she gets lonely down there in the dirt.
Haunted houses. Messy people making bad decisions. “Destination horror.” What could go wrong? Nothing But Blackened Teeth is a quiet piece of character-driven horror that draws on Japanese folklore while also shining a light on the horrors of fractured relationships. I absolutely loved this novella and can’t wait for you all to read it – it’s perfect for Spooky Season!
“The words, each time they came, felt so repetitive that I could tune a clock to their angst, sawed through me. You can’t move forward when someone keeps dragging you back.”
Nothing But Blackened Teeth is perfect for fans of hauntingly written horror that juxtaposes the horrors of the real world with the supernatural.
None Shall Sleep by Ellie Marney
The Silence of the Lambs meets Sadie in this riveting psychological thriller about two teenagers teaming up with the FBI to track down juvenile serial killers.
In 1982, two teenagers—serial killer survivor Emma Lewis and US Marshal candidate Travis Bell—are recruited by the FBI to interview convicted juvenile killers and provide insight and advice on cold cases. From the start, Emma and Travis develop a quick friendship, gaining information from juvenile murderers that even the FBI can’t crack. But when the team is called in to give advice on an active case—a serial killer who exclusively hunts teenagers—things begin to unravel. Working against the clock, they must turn to one of the country’s most notorious incarcerated murderers for help: teenage sociopath Simon Gutmunsson. Despite Travis’s objections, Emma becomes the conduit between Simon and the FBI team. But while Simon seems to be giving them the information they need to save lives, he’s an expert manipulator playing a very long game…and he has his sights set on Emma.
Captivating, harrowing, and chilling, None Shall Sleep is an all-too-timely exploration of not only the monsters that live among us, but also the monsters that live inside us.
Some reviews made this book sound absolutely terrifying, but I have a high threshold as a lifetime lover of horror so I didn’t find it scary. I’m probably not a good judge for the scare factor though, but if you can watch & enjoy Criminal Minds and Silence of the Lambs, I think you will be okay. The book is graphic and violent, diving into the minds of serial killers and the hunt to catch them.
“The idea of being part of a team is tempting. It’s the isolation of the thing that eats away at you: being alone on the island of the mind.”
None Shall Sleep is perfect for fans of Mindhunters, true crime, and Criminal Minds.
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find—her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region.
Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: Not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemí’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.
Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family’s youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family’s past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family’s once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.
And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind.
At this point I’m sure everyone’s heard of Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. I devoured this book in one sitting; I simply couldn’t pry my eyes away until the end… CREEPY house, CREEPY people, & excellently plotted Gothic thriller set in 1950s Mexico that you won’t be able to put down!
“They’re cursed, I tell you, and that house is haunted. You’re very silly or very brave living in a haunted house.”
Mexican Gothic is perfect for fans of Gothic fiction. If you liked Crimson Peak, this book matches that aesthetic and vibes well in my opinion.

Awesome selection, Kal! I’m glad to see Poe’s Fall of the House of Usher! The new Netflix series has me so intrigued that I might as well make a full plunge into all of Poe’s work hahah
Thank you, Lashaan! I haven’t watched the Netflix adaptation yet but I love how it’s getting people excited about Poe’s work. You DEF should take the plunge!
Great selection! I loved the gothic atmosphere and descriptions in Mexican Gothic, and I love the sound of Our Last Echoes and The Haunting Of Alejandra.
Mexican Gothic is such a good book and I’m happy to see you enjoyed it as well! I definitely think you’d enjoy Our Last Echoes and The Haunting of Alejandra, I hope you pick them up.
Great list! I loved reading Edgar Allen Poe’s work when I was younger, but I haven’t revisited most of it now as an adult. I really should! The Fall of the House of Usher was one in particular that I enjoyed before but I don’t think I fully understood.
I just finished Sarah Monette’s novella A Theory of Haunting and it was fabulous! It’s got a Gothic atmosphere and a creepy house, and was a really fun read.
I’ve been slowly revisting Poe’s work over the past few years and I’ve gained such a deeper appreciation, highly recommend! Reading Fall of the House of Usher this year was EYE OPENING. Like, me in high school just didn’t have the life experience to appreciate it as I do now,
Oooh I am going to have to check A Theory of Haunting out, thanks for the recommendation!
I love your spooky list! I’ve been behind on my reading this year, so it’ll be nice to dive into some shorter stories that I can read just in time for Halloween. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for stopping by and I hope you were able to dive into a few to catch up on your reading! I’m beind this year as well… by a lot. Ugh!
Love these recommendations!! I’m not too much of a spooky – horror kind of reader, but some of these intrigue me, especially Our Last Echoes!!
Thanks so much for reading this list even though spooky – horror reader, Marie! I hope you’ve been well and Our Last Echoes is really good but def spooky haha
I LOVE spooky season!! Although this year i’ve been quite on neutral and not as excited as usual..
The only one that I’ve read in the list is nothing but b’ackened teeth and ?? Im not sure I understood that one 😳 The vocabulary was a bit too rich for my brain, ithink?
I know what you mean about feeling neutral this year – holidays in general aren’t hitting the same for me and I read NO Spooky Books thanks to the slump 😭
Cassandra Khaw’s writing definitely leans more literary so I can see it being difficult to read, especially if English isn’t your first language!
Great list, Kal.
I’m so much more of a scaredy cat in my menopausal years, so I’m off to check out your other (less horror) autumn reads. Lol!
Thank you for stopping by even thought you’re a scaredy cat! I hope the autumn list gives you some good recommendations and happy autumn!
