The Vine Witch (The Vine Witch #1)
by Luanne G. Smith

Historical Fantasy

The Vine Witch coverA young witch emerges from a curse to find her world upended in this gripping fantasy of betrayal, vengeance, and self-discovery set in turn-of-the-century France.

For centuries, the vineyards at Château Renard have depended on the talent of their vine witches, whose spells help create the world-renowned wine of the Chanceaux Valley. Then the skill of divining harvests fell into ruin when sorcière Elena Boureanu was blindsided by a curse. Now, after breaking the spell that confined her to the shallows of a marshland and weakened her magic, Elena is struggling to return to her former life. And the vineyard she was destined to inherit is now in the possession of a handsome stranger.

Vigneron Jean-Paul Martel naively favors science over superstition, and he certainly doesn’t endorse the locals’ belief in witches. But Elena knows a hex when she sees one, and the vineyard is covered in them. To stay on and help the vines recover, she’ll have to hide her true identity, along with her plans for revenge against whoever stole seven winters of her life. And she won’t rest until she can defy the evil powers that are still a threat to herself, Jean-Paul, and the ancient vine-witch legacy in the rolling hills of the Chanceaux Valley..

Now she learns that angels shun the Ystaran’s descendants. If they are touched by angelic magic, their blood will turn to ash. They are known as Refusers, and can only live the most lowly lives.

But Liliath cares nothing for the descendants of her people, save how they can serve her. It is four young Sarancians who hold her interest: Simeon, a studious doctor-in-training; Henri, a dedicated fortune hunter; Agnez, an adventurous musketeer cadet; and Dorotea, an icon-maker and scholar of angelic magic. They are the key to her quest.

The Beautiful (The Beautiful #1)
by Renee Adieh
Young Adult, Historical Fantasy

The Beautiful coverNew York Times bestselling author Renée Ahdieh returns with a sumptuous, sultry and romantic new series set in 19th century New Orleans where vampires hide in plain sight.

In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans provides her a refuge after she’s forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent along with six other girls, Celine quickly becomes enamored with the vibrant city from the music to the food to the soirées and—especially—to the danger. She soon becomes embroiled in the city’s glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group’s leader, the enigmatic Sébastien Saint Germain. When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in the lair of La Cour des Lions, Celine battles her attraction to him and suspicions about Sébastien’s guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.

When more bodies are discovered, each crime more gruesome than the last, Celine and New Orleans become gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the loose—one Celine is sure has set her in his sights . . . and who may even be the young man who has stolen her heart. As the murders continue to go unsolved, Celine takes matters into her own hands and soon uncovers something even more shocking: an age-old feud from the darkest creatures of the underworld reveals a truth about Celine she always suspected simmered just beneath the surface.

At once a sultry romance and a thrilling murder mystery, master storyteller Renée Ahdieh embarks on her most potent fantasy series yet: The Beautiful.

Once I get my books back in the shelves, I might do an unhaul and that might help stop me from buying every damn thing that sounds remotely interesting.

    September 23, 2019 at 11:55 AM

I’m definitely eyeing The Beautiful since the book sounds perfect for the fall and is also written by one of my favorite YA authors. Also love that the story takes place in spooky New Orleans. How perfect is that?! *Runs to Netgalley to request ASAP.* Thanks so much for the heads up. I love that SO MANY AMAZING books publish in the fall. I’m stoked for fall reading; thanks for a great list to get me going.

    1. Kal

      October 4, 2019 at 8:31 PM

I agree with you on the New Orleans setting for The Beautiful! I read the sampler a couple of months ago, and the vibe was just PERFECT! I really want to go back to NOLA sometime soon and just hang out in graveyards. Happy reading, Christine!

Crier’s War was SO GOOD. I gave it four stars, and I’m so happy that an f/f fantasy book is getting the hype it deserves! i’m actually so behind on my arcs for October, so the fact that these new releases that I don’t have arcs for are distracting me is bad haha. The cover of The Gravemaidens originally wasn’t enticing me very much, but the premise is so interesting! I’m also excited for The Beautiful because I know from experience that Renee Ahdieh can write romance and descriptions like no other. Also, I just recently read your interview with Rosiee Thor, and it made me doubly excited for Tarnished Are the Stars!

    1. Kal

      October 4, 2019 at 9:03 PM

Your screaming about the book is a big reason that I wound up pre-order Crier’s War and I can’t WAIT for it to be in my hands! And yea, I hear you on being behind on arc reading. I had to abandon my mountain because I am burned out of SFF and that is literally ALL I HAVE ARCS FOR RIGHT NOW. I just need a month of spooky as a palate cleanse. We have so many exciting books to look forward to this month!

KALEENA, YOU CAN’T KEEP DOING THIS TO ME!!! If I file for bankruptcy, I’m blaming you in full for convincing me to buy all of these! Haha. Jokes aside, I am so pumped for The Beautiful and Into the Crooked Place! I love both the authors so much, so my expectations are off the charts. I’m also quite excited to check out Firebourne when it releases! Wonderful list, Kal! <3

    1. Kal

      October 4, 2019 at 9:06 PM

I’M SORRY! But really, we should be blaming the publishers for not spacing out their books better! I am sosososo excited for the Beautiful and plan on picking up my copy as soon as the store opens on Tuesday. I really enjoyed the sampler I read for Fireborne and am looking forward to reading my arc of it when I’m in the mood for fantasy again.

Quite a few of these are on my TBR! Can’t wait to read Into the Crooked Place and Crier’s War. I just recently discovered The Vine Witch and that one seems interesting! Great list 🙂

Thank you so much, and my copy of Crier’s War arrived today and it is so damn beautiful it brought tears to my eyes.
