A Week in Reading from Quarantine

Greetings, friends! I don’t normally do weekly recap posts – mostly because I have weeks that I do literally nothing – but considering everything that’s been going on in the world and my personal life over the last month, I thought now was a good time!

So let’s grab a cup of coffee, pet a local cat, and chat about what’s been going on in the last week.

What I’ve Been Reading

Reading is difficult for me when anxiety runs high; I struggle to focus on anything for any extended period of time.

The Electric Heir coverThe Electric Heir (Feverwake #2) by Victoria Lee

I finished this one on the 17th and honestly? I am still processing. I’ll admit that this is a weird time to be reading a dystopian novel about a virus (of magic), but I absolutely loved this book! It handles some heavy topics as the characters process their trauma, but in this house we protect Dara Shirazi.

The Fever King was one of my favorite books of 2019, and The Electric Heir is a stunning end to the duology. I hope to have a review written soon!

Currently Reading

Untitled Sequel (Light at the Bottom of the World #2) by London Shah  –  ~50%

I’m slowly beta reading the sequel to The Light at the Bottom of the World right now, and I am really enjoying it! I feel so bad that I’m taking so long, but I’ve been struggling to read at all… and when I do, my brain doesn’t really want dystopian. But I do love how much this hope this duology has interwoven in the narrative.

The Silence of Bones coverThe Silence of Bones by June Hur  – 15%

To mix up the dystopian kick in my current reads, I picked up June Hur’s debut YA Historical Fiction/Mystery, The Silence of Bones.

I’m not very far into it yet, but the narrative is descriptive and full of emotion. It’s haunting and I want to punch all the men in the throat.

What I’ve Been Playing

I fell into Ori and the Will of the Wisps because it showed up in the Xbox Game Pass free to play. Friends? This game is beautiful and the music is soothing as heck. If you like platformers, I’d recommended this one!

Like most of the world, I’ve been anxiously awaiting Animal Crossing: New Horizons. My download finished around 10pm on Thursday night, and I’ve been happily pulling weeds and catching bugs to creep out poor Blathers. This franchise is just soothing for me as well; it’s soft and lowkey, and just what the world needs in this time.

Life & Laptop Update

I spent a couple of weeks of March sick with the flu, followed promptly by a chest congestion and strep throat. Fun times! Now that I’m better, the State of California is under a Stay at Home order. I’ve talked around my chronic health issues in the past, but the sad reality is that my life hasn’t really changed all that much with social distancing. My one-year anniversary of that initial medical leave of absence was actually on Saturday, and it’s honestly been a little devastating to see the small bits of progress I’ve worked for fade away. I haven’t seen family or friends in a month.

As isolating as everything has been, it has been oddly comforting that everyone else is essentially experiencing the same thing. Please check in on your chronically ill and disabled friends. The anxiety, depression, loneliness, and isolation you are feeling is something we experience every day. I sincerely hope that people will be a bit more compassionate once this ends, because no one really wants to stay isolated in their homes to collect a measly check from the government.

Around the time that I got sick, my laptop stopped working. 2020 is the worst and I would like a refund. I had to wait almost 3 weeks to get it fixed… and it turned out that my laptop had WAY more issues than the overheating & shutting down. The OS is completely shot, but thankfully I still had my previous laptop my dad replaced because the fan was making a ton of noise. I got the laptop back with a cleaned and greased fan, on Friday – that last that that non-essential businesses were allowed to be open in the state, but the battery needed to be replaced. Supposing the battery arrives tomorrow as planned, I should at least be able to use my laptop while socially isolated. *crossing fingers*

oh no! I’m so sorry to hear about your laptop troubles…I’m happy it was eventually resolved though! I’ve also been playing Animal Crossing and am really enjoying it. I totally feel you about not being able to focus on reading as much when you’re anxious; that’s definitely me right now too. Hang in there, Kal <3

Yea, I am glad I was able to get one working before my state went Shelter in Place… it could have been an ANNOYING quarantine. Animal Crossing is so damn pure and just what we need in this world, I am glad you’ve been enjoying it as well! Hope all is well, Mel!

I think a lot of us are struggling with reading these days, which makes me feel a lot less guilty (updated pub dates are also helping). I hope you are able to read soon, and are staying healthy!

PROTECT NOAM AND DARA 5EVER! I honestly loved the book so much but still haven’t been able to formulate my thoughts into a semi-coherent review. It’s a mess lol. I haven’t been able to read a page since this post, but I was really enjoying Silence of Bones before my brain became incapable of focus. My MH hasn’t been /too/ bad, thank you! I hope yours is doing okay because ily

I hope your laptop gets fixed soon, and that your mental health takes a turn for the better, Kal! <3
I'm so excited to read The Electric Heir! 😭 The Fever King was one of my fave books from last year, and I'm dying to continue Noam and Dara's story. I'm also highly anticipating The Silence of Bones! It has one of the most interesting premises ever, and I haven't read many books set in Korea. I'm especially excited for it now, because I'm currently obsessed with k-dramas, haha 🥺

It’s alive, my laptop is alive!!! Of course as soon as I got it working I needed to hermit from people, but my mental health is doing a bit better now and I’m doing my best to stay sane in isolation with my cat. I hope you are doing well!

I hope you enjoy The Electric Heir as much as I did, Noam and Dara are so precious and it was a Time finishing heir story. Stress!

I don’t play Animal Crossing but I’ve seen a lot about it lately on Twitter – it seems like it was released at the perfect time! But oh my gosh, the thought of my laptop conking out right now is absolutely terrifying…I was anticipating buying one towards the end of the year but hopefully it serves me well now!! I’m glad you got yours back just in time.

Animal Crossing definitely came at the perfect time, the game is so soft and calming and I am really thankful for it! Yea, quarantine without a laptop is a level of hell I am not interested in experiencing.

I have heard from a lot of chronically ill people that social distancing hasn’t changed much but they have been able to help people settling in or find comfort in knowing others share some of their situations. I am so sorry your laptop has completely packed it in but thank goodness for having a back up! And yay for reading and Animal Crossing. Love that game so much.

Yea, it’s definitely been finding comfort from not being alone in this… and it is nice to help others adjust to the situation. Animal Crossing is so good, a blessing!!!

Sending you all the love kalkal and I hope the battery arrives ok so you can get the laptop up and running again <3

I’m so sorry, love. I’m sending you so much light and love. I know I haven’t been around much lately but I’m finally feeling “myself” enough again to say with confidence that if there is ANYTHING I can do, whether it’s listening to a vent or offering distraction or whatever, please don’t hesitate to message me. I know I can’t do anything to fix the state of the world or physical or mental health struggles, but I love you so, so much and will always be here for you in any way possible.

Thank you so much, Destiny. I love you so incredibly much and appreciate your friendship more than words can express. I hope that you know I am always here for you… even if it takes me a bit to reply. Let’s catch up soon, and maybe we can play a game together or something. xoxo

Oooh, Animal Crossing! I hope the battery came in, and I hate when laptop issues ignore the fact that you have other stuff going on, it’s like technology senses that and busts during the worst times. I’ve been playing a lot of Assassin’s Creed Origins and not a lot of reading going on. Did you finish Electric Heir?

The battery arrived and I am no longer laptopless! I did finish Electric Heir… I cried a lot and haven’t been able to write a review yet.

🙁 I’m sorry to hear you haven’t seen family and friends and that the stay at home happened just as when you’re feeling better! The timing couldn’t be worse. 🙁 I hope the battery is working now with the replacement! Stay safe and healthy and just know I’ll be waddling all over if you disappear for more than a few days. I hope you’re eating too.

Thanks Soph. It’s been hard but at least this quarantine thing will end eventually. If anything, it’s taught me that life isn’t linear and neither is progress. I can’t beat myself up over things I have no control over. Just gotta do my best! The battery is working great, THANK YOU! I love you.
